Considered to be an architectural marvel, due to its specific architecture and age, Panagia Paraportiani is one of the most significant monuments in all of the Aegean.
Composed of two floors, the Paraportiani is made up of differing whitewashed churches built on the ruins of a tower from the medieval wall of Mykonos.
The four churches of Agios Sozontas, Agioi Anargyroi, Agia Anastasia and Agios Efstafios are located on the ground floor and together with the main church form into a wonderful asymmetrical glimmering white church.
The main church dates from the 15th century and its name Paraportiani is derived from the word "porta" which means door.
Located 8 kms east of the island’s capital, the Monastery of Panagia Tourliani in Ano Mera owes its name to a priceless icon, made by Evangelist Loukas, that was found floating in the sea region of Tourlos.
The Monastery was founded in 1542 and was then called the church of the presentation of the Virgin Mary. In 1767, the monastery was renovated and has remained in the same form ever since.
The fine wood carved art of the church’s temple that was made in Florence in 1775, gilded with curved angels and flowers, is very impressive. From an architectural perspective, the monastery possesses spare, linear lines, a whitewashed exterior, coloured dome and marble bell tower, a characteristic sample of the traditional marble sculpture of the Cyclades.
The Archaeological Museum was built in 1902 in Kamnaki in Chora to house the foundings of the "Purification Pit", the prehistoric necropolis which was discovered in 1898 in Rhenia.
